My last post in this blog~:)

My last post to this lovely and cute blog.
After 1 sem of studyin this subject, media and culture,
in my opinion i felt that everything in this subject is about point of view.
Different peoples have different viewing of certain things.

Such as, semiotic.
As what i have knew, semiotic is something that very abstract.
No certain answer or explanation for it.
Its all about point of view.
The logo of Mcd, the word "M" is too famous all over the world makes people thinks that its an iconic.
According to semiotic theory, it is an arbitrary as there will still have peoples who doesn't know McDonald's.
But there are still have people who stongly disagree with this.

Thus, in my point of view,
there is no a fix answer in semiotic.

Realism

Lecturer usually explain realism through ancient arts or certain artists' works.
But i felt that if i explain it using cartoon or games will be more fun~:)

So I'll start with animation part.

Picture below is an animation called "sailormoon".
I am so crazy with it during my childhood.
In this picture, you can easily recognize that this is a cartoon, an animation.
It has a 2D look.

But as time pass, they slowly change to more realistic.
More 3D like.

This is also an japanese anime name " card captor sakura".
Picture tells everything.
The character in this picture looks more 3D, more real.
Yet, we stil can recognize it is a cartoon or animation.

When comes to my 3rd and last picture,
you will seriously confuse between realistic and animation.

This is a picture i found from google,
a character from the animation final fantasy.
Now,
did you starts to confuse is it a real human being or animation?

This is so called realism.
Something that getting more real,
but its not a real thing.

MC LUHAN^^

Wow..~ Comes to Mc Luhan,
I knew nothing about it until few days ago,
i slowly understand why is he related to our lovely media.

He actually comes out with a sentence of
"medium was the message"
which means that no matter what form of medium we used,
it is one of the message convey to someone.

Let me give some examples.

This is a picture that i get it from somwhere else.
I pretty sure that the person who created this picture is asking her girl not to cry.
He is there for her.
Instead of tons of words,
the person chose to use picture to convey his lovely message to the girl.

This is a another commercial advertisment.
Without using any words or video or flash,
they used a photograph and some editing skills to convey the hidden message of their slogan,
"JUST DO IT".

Lastly, my point of view,
I strongly attracted by what Mc Luhan said,
"medium was the message".
It is right.

Connotation and Denotation

I simply grabbed a pictures from google to do a simple explanation and example about
denotation and connotation.

I have explained in my first post about denotation and connotation.
Here is a simple definition for both of them.
Denotation is the literal meaning of a picture or words.
On the contrary,
connotation is the hidden meaning of it.

Denotation of the picture
- A boy who without shirt and shoe is standing there,
looks like he wants to pee or he is pee-ing.
- The wall is dirty.
- Surrounding is dirty, ground is full of sand and rubbish.
- Wall painted with drawing and some words " JUST DO IT".
- A dog is standing near to the boy.

Connotation of the picture
- The arbitrary sign on the wall is nike's logo.
- The words "JUST DO IT" on the wall is nike's slogan,
telling people to do things whatever they want.
- The boy in the picture is following the slogan on the wall,
doing what he wants.
- The dog near the boy is looking a the boy as if he/she wants to follow what he is doing .
- The place in the picture and the shirtless boy show us that this is  a poor area,
which no one cares to bother and clean up with.
- The dirty wall shows that no one is bothering this place for quite a long time.

(PS : daniel, im not sure am i right, but im trying my best to do analysis using semiotic method:) )

mythology
It is obviously a commercial advertistment of NIKE.
With their slogan, "JUST DO IT" they are saying that even at a poor area,
you can just do whatever you wanted to.

shannon and weaver communication theory

Okay, lets back to a topic taught in previous lesson.

Communication theory
which created by Warren Weaver when he applied Claud Shannon's concept of information loss to interpersonal communication.

According to Shannon and Weaver's model, a message is begin from an information souce.
Go through a transmitter and pass through all kind of noice sources,
finally reach to a receiver and ended up in the destination.

Let's explain this in a more clearer way.
Before you wants to speak something, you must first move an idea from your brain to your mouth.
So, your brain definitely will become the information source and your mouth is the transmitter.
Once you spoke out, your idea will slowly pass through all kind of noises which we called them as "noice sources",
and it will finally reach a receiver, an ear of a person.
Then the receiver will take everything that it receives and send it to the brain.
Finally, the receiver conveys the messages to the other person's mind which is destination.

Modernism

I have postmodernism in my blog.
Of course I will also have modernism here!!! ^^

For me, I actually not really completely understand about modernism,
just have an idea of modernism is something or a city that becomes more and more modern.

After asking Sabrina, I have a little bit confidence that this is one of the definition.~
xD
Modernism is actually when people start wants to build a better future.

Lets see some pictures of building.
I took paris's building as an example of this topic.

London during 1941

London during 2011

From here you can see that, although some of the architecture designs of this 2 building from different era are likely,
but something you will realise that building in the second picture is somehow more modern.

For me , this is modernism.
:)

postmodernism

Haha.~
let's get some songs relax now.
Imagine by John Lennon.

This is a song that Daniel shows us in the class,
and now I'm using it to talk about postmodernism.

First of all, let me show you the lyrics:)

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

So, what do you think about the lyrics?
I strongly think that it is belongs to postmodernism.
It is about a person forever dreaming about something that unusual and wouldn't happen.

No heaven, no hell, no countries, no religion.
Somthing that peoples trying to broke the usual rule and stop moving forward.
Instead, they sit nothing and wish for something else that out of the boundaries.
In my opinion, postmodernism is a sad era. It is an era of uncertainty.

Codes and laguages

A simple action, movement or gesture will ja

Just think in a way that you are on another planet,
watching those living things in that planet doing some akward movements or actions,
creating akward sounds ,
you will definitely think that it is their own codes and languages.

So, same goes to us.
In fact, we as human use many codes or languages to communicate amongst ourselves.
Such as body codes and music and sound codes.

Body codes included postures, movements, gestures, facial expression, gaze and etc.
Music and sound code included rhythim, pitch, timbre, instrument sets , accents and etc.

regarding to our special talks^^

There are two special talks that offered by college which is on 5th and 12th of august.
It was a talk given by a guy lecturer who used to teach in china skul.~
Something that i really admired him is that, he able to speak english fluently although he stayed at china for quite a long time.

I have only went to the first one.
It's excellent, in many ways.

The talk is about postmodernism.
The detail part of the talk, I can't really recall.
But what I really like about the talk is all the general knowledge that he told us.

One of it will be the chinese culture from different countries are totally different.
We always used to think that chinese culture will be the same throughout the whole world.
But practically, it is not.
For an example, chinese in Malaysia are still follow to their tradition such as during Qingming festival.
Young and old pray before the ancestors, sweep the tombs and offer food, tea, wine, chopsticks, joss paper accessories, and/or libations to the ancestors.
Most of us actually though that China peoples are doing the same thing but through what he told us, I foudn out that we're wrong. As time pass, alot of them are not following the traditions anymore.
Then, he told us "in fact, Malaysia is a unique country as we have our very own culture which different from others."
I'm happy to knew this and only realise that we're different.
