Ok~ let's talk abit about my essay that i chose.
3. using two of the following sets of ideas, analyse a local or regionally made media artefact of your choice (e.g. an application, website, computer game, mobile device operating system, advert, film, television programme ):
-iconic/arbitrary
-paradigm/syntagm
-denotation/connotation/myth
-binary opposition
What is iconic and arbitrary~?
Explain in a easier way, iconic will be like a real image or a real thing.
In the opposite, arbitrary will be an icon which looks like the real image.
So, its so obvious that images above the first picture will be iconic,
and the second one will be the arbitrary.
The next one will be paradigm and syntagm.
example above was given by daniel, but its a gud one for me to understand.
its like the story of 3 little pigs,
paradigm is a name of the category.
and syntagm is the things under that particular category.
example in the story, pig is the paradigm,
for syntagm, there are pig1, pig2 and pig3.
The same thing goes to house as the paradigm,
and syntagm is the types of houses, such as
brick, stick and hay.
For the next one,
everyone of us studied isi tersurat and tersirat during our high school.
Denotation is like tersurat, which what it is denotes. The obvious meaning of the sign.
Connotation will be tersirat, which whats the an idea that is implied or suggested.
A binary opposition is a pair of opposites,
such as raw and cooked.
Or another example is like in fairy tales there are the good one and a bad one,
princess and eveil step mother,
prince and dragon.
