I simply grabbed a pictures from google to do a simple explanation and example about
denotation and connotation.
I have explained in my first post about denotation and connotation.
Here is a simple definition for both of them.
Denotation is the literal meaning of a picture or words.
On the contrary,
connotation is the hidden meaning of it.
Denotation of the picture
- A boy who without shirt and shoe is standing there,
looks like he wants to pee or he is pee-ing.
- The wall is dirty.
- Surrounding is dirty, ground is full of sand and rubbish.
- Wall painted with drawing and some words " JUST DO IT".
- A dog is standing near to the boy.
Connotation of the picture
- The arbitrary sign on the wall is nike's logo.
- The words "JUST DO IT" on the wall is nike's slogan,
telling people to do things whatever they want.
- The boy in the picture is following the slogan on the wall,
doing what he wants.
- The dog near the boy is looking a the boy as if he/she wants to follow what he is doing .
- The place in the picture and the shirtless boy show us that this is a poor area,
which no one cares to bother and clean up with.
- The dirty wall shows that no one is bothering this place for quite a long time.
(PS : daniel, im not sure am i right, but im trying my best to do analysis using semiotic method:) )
mythology
It is obviously a commercial advertistment of NIKE.
With their slogan, "JUST DO IT" they are saying that even at a poor area,
you can just do whatever you wanted to.
